2011 Season Opener - Long Beach Roller Derby

April 22, 2011,
4th Street Retro Rollers VS Terminal Island Tootsies

The majority of these were shot on a Canon 50D, a 24-70mm L Series Lens and a 580 EX II strobe.  I'll usually shoot at 1/250 - 1/320 of a second to stop this type of action.  The 50D is bad with high ISO so I stopped at ISO 400.  I use a pocket wizard remote setup to trigger strobes.  Due to security and mobility, I had my friend, Sean, run around with only one strobe either camera left or camera right.  We ended up getting really close and I ran the stobe at 1/8 to 1/4 power. These are my top 20.

Favorite Overall: Diesel is going to Whip The Jammer. Great light, great expresions, great action!

This was after halftime and I wanted to do something different.  I like to shoot trails at around 8/10 of a second and use second shutter flash to freeze the subject right before the shutter closes. The flash setting was way to bright for the long shutter speed, so I ran with an f-stop of about 8-9.  It's easier to start dailing your f-stop down than it is to yell to your lighting guy to change the storbe settings.

Favorite Creative: Ref is pointing to the lead Jammer and no one else is on this side of the track.

Favorite Story:  Time is running out and we're down.

Favorite Smile: The Bout MVP!
